Description: Portrait of Othniel Looker (1757-1845), who served in the Ohio House of Representatives from 1807 to 1809, and in the Ohio Senate from 1810-1812 and 1813-1817. He became acting governor when Governor Return J. Meigs, Jr., resigned to become Postmaster General of the United States. Looker served as Ohio's fifth governor from March 25 to December 8, 1814, then ran for reelection at the end of that term, only to be defeated by Thomas Worthington. Description: Canal plat map showing a section of the Miami and Erie Canal through Butler and Hamilton Counties, between stations 11774 and 12019, and past the small community of Port Union. Roads, properties, bridges, locks and other landmarks along the route are noted. The map was created under the direction of the members of the Canal Commission of the state of Ohio and approved by the Chief Engineer of the Department of Public Works (variously referred to as the Board of Public Works and the Division of Public Works). Description: Milford is an abbreviated form of mill ford and was so named because it was the first safe ford across the Little Miami River and was the only way for many people to reach the oil mill. The area was first surveyed by John Nancarrow, a Revolutionary War veteran from Virginia. John Hageman was the first permanent settler, and the area was originally named Hangeman's Mill. In 1803 Hageman put up a small mill to improve water power. After Hangeman left for Indiana in 1815, Milford became the popular name of the area. Around 1805, Ethan Stone of Cincinnati, built an oil mill on the mill-race above a small bridge, which was in operation until 1817. In this building, carding was done by Rust and Dimmet, and later, John Eldredge, had a liquor distillery. In 1818 a wood bridge made the ford obsolete and in 1920, the old mill that was the city's namesake, burned down. View on Ohio Memory.

The 18-hole, par 69 Potter Park Golf Course is one of a number of golf courses in the city of Hamilton, leading to Hamilton being ranked Ohio's third best major city for golfers by Golf Digest in July 1998. Description: Photograph of two children in a historic automobile, taken by Paula Deimling of Milford, Ohio. The image was one of ten to win Honorable Mention in the Professional category of the Spirit of Ohio Bicentennial Photo Contest. In August 1976, the Ohio American Revolution Bicentennial Advisory Committee (OARBAC) began the Spirit of Ohio Bicentennial Photo Contest as part of a larger effort in Ohio to celebrate the 1976 American Bicentennial. The contest was meant to document "the spirit and character of the people and places which represent Ohio during [the] bicentennial year," and to create a permanent photographic archive of the year's festivity for use by future researchers. Both professional and amateur photographers submitted over 500 photographs for consideration, all taken within the state between January 1 and December 31, 1976. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Portrait of William Ellsworth Hoy from "Historical and Biographical Souvenir of the Ohio School for the Deaf," published in Columbus, Ohio, in 1898. In addition to a history of the school's operation, the book includes "portraits and biographical sketches of representative alumni" such as Hoy. Hoy was born in rural Hancock County near the village of Houcktown in 1862. After losing his hearing at age 6, he was enrolled in the Ohio School for the Deaf in 1872. He graduated as valedictorian in 1879, and worked as a shoemaker back in Hancock County before entering the field of professional baseball in 1886. His career, recognized as the most accomplished for a deaf player in major league baseball history, included seasons as a center fielder with the Northwestern League in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, the Washington National League, the Buffalo Players' National League, the St. Louis American Association, and the Cincinnati National League, among others. He left baseball in 1903, and operated a dairy farm outside of Cincinnati with his family, but was active in support of the deaf community and the field of baseball. He died following a stroke in 1961, at the age of 99. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: On the left is a Wool bunting Stars and Stripes bearing 34 stars in rows of 7-7-6-7-7. On the right is a gold silk guidon taken to battle by the 1st Ohio Volunteer Heavy Artillery. A horizontal line divides flag. Above the live are two crossed cannons and below it is the text: "LADY FLINT". These flags were not cataloged. The 117th Ohio Volunteer Infantry was mustered on September 15, 1862. The regiment was later reorganized as the 1st Ohio Volunteer Heavy Artillery on May 2, 1863. Companies from the regiment performed service in Tennessee, Virginia and North Carolina before mustering out in Knoxville, Tennessee, on July 25, 1865. Ohio battle flags were on display at the Ohio Statehouse until the 1960s, when the state formed a committee to oversee the efforts to restore the fragile flags. Some of the battle flags were on display on the Plaza Level of the Ohio Historical Society from 1970 until 1989. For conservation reasons, the flags have been in storage since 1989. In the 1960s, the collection was photographed and commercial artist Robert Needham painted illustrations of many Civil War flags. Description: This is a photograph of a swallowtail guidon of the 1st Ohio Volunteer Light Artillery, Battery C. This swallowtail stars and stripes pennant bears 34 stars: 18 in outer circle, 12 in inner circle, and one each in the canton's four corners. The regiment was called upon April 21, 1861 in a letter to Colonel James Barnett from the Governor, William Dennison. Each Battery of the 1st has its own history and operated independently in battle. Their initial appointment was for three months, though most served an additional campaign for three to five years. Battery C was quickly appointed to another 3 year campaign at Camp Dennison near Cincinnati and mustered into service on September 9, 1861. Major engagements in which the battery took part include Mill Springs, Chickamauga, Mission Ridge, the Atlanta Campaign and Sherman's March to the Sea.
